Listen before telling the story

The first responsibility of a humanitarian story is to the people whose lives it describes.

Begin with someone else’s perspective

A story can invite understanding, but it can also turn a person into a symbol. Before choosing the frame, make room for the people closest to the experience to describe what matters to them.

Make room for agency

Humanitarian storytelling should show people making decisions, supporting one another, and shaping their own futures. A person’s life is larger than the need that first drew an interviewer’s attention.

Keep the conversation open

A published story is one account, not the last word. Listening includes returning to questions, correcting errors, and remaining willing to understand more.
